Praia to Maio Ferry
Search Praia → Maio ferries arrow_forwardThe ferry from Praia to Maio is one of the most accessible island-hopping trips in Cape Verde. Maio is just a couple of hours from the capital by sea and offers a very different experience from the busier islands. It is flat, dry, and known for its long empty beaches and unhurried way of life.
The Route
Ferries depart from the port in Praia on Santiago and arrive at the small port of Vila do Maio, the island's only town. The crossing heads east across calmer water than some of the longer routes.
How Long Does the Crossing Take?
The journey from Praia to Maio takes approximately 2 hours.
How Often Do Ferries Run?
The service runs several times per week as part of the CV Interilhas Linha Sotavento schedule. Check the Ondas search tool for the current days and times before planning your trip.
What to Do on Maio
Maio is one of the least visited islands in Cape Verde which is much of its appeal. The beaches are long and largely empty. The island has good conditions for kitesurfing and is home to important sea turtle nesting sites. Vila do Maio has a handful of restaurants and guesthouses. Life moves slowly here and that is entirely the point.
Buying Tickets
Tickets can be bought online through CV Interilhas or at the port in Praia. The route is less busy than some others so last-minute tickets are usually available, though booking ahead is always safer.
